bbq honey chicken wings

serves 4 as an appetizer, 2–3 as a mainmain (chicken)

ingredients

  • for the chicken wings:
  • 5–2 lbs chicken wings
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp olive oil or avocado oil
  • for the honey bbq sauce:
  • ⅓ cup raw local honey
  • ¼ cup tomato paste or clean ketchup (no hfcs)
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp coconut aminos (or tamari)
  • 1 tsp dijon mustard
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • pinch of cayenne (optional)
  • salt to taste

instructions

preheat your oven to 400°f or set your air fryer to 380°f. pat the chicken wings dry with paper towels to ensure they crisp up nicely. in a large bowl, toss the wings with olive oil, salt, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper until well coated. arrange the wings on a wire rack over a baking sheet or place them in a single layer in the air fryer basket. bake in the oven for 40–45 minutes, flipping halfway through. if using an air fryer, cook for 25–28 minutes, shaking once during cooking. while the wings are baking, prepare the honey bbq sauce. in a saucepan over low heat, combine honey, tomato paste, apple cider vinegar, coconut aminos, dijon mustard, smoked paprika, and cayenne (if using). simmer gently for 5–10 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly. adjust seasoning with additional honey or vinegar to taste. once the wings are cooked, toss them in the warm sauce to coat evenly. for a caramelized finish, return them to the oven under the broiler for 5 minutes.

notes

variation: replace the tomato paste with a mixture of roasted carrots and a splash of vinegar for a nightshade-free version.
